Authentic Mid-Century pieces, from the client's collection, mix well with more contemporary ones, like the indoor/outdoor gray, cocktail boulders. The Nakashima coffee table was a gift from the client?s aunt. Custom carpets were designed to accommodate and define the living room, dining room and gallery hall. Bright blocks of color, and in geometric patterns, keep the mood fresh and light. Two seating areas provide plenty of room for entertaining, while drum fixtures ?at the ceiling- float, like silent angels into the room, bringing light and cheer.

Luxurious living on Sutton Place. Classic 40?s furniture gets a ?face-lift? and looks ?40? again when melded with contemporary art and textiles. Squash-blossom lamps stay off the silk-route with parchment drum shades, giving them a modernist edge........................

Life lived LARGE in a compact space, this globe-trotting photo-journalist?s apartment is a quiet haven away from the hustle and bustle of the City. The built-in captain?s bed acts as the apartment?s ?command center,? complete with full-depth, under-the-bed storage, wedge-shaped headboard and entertainment center-cum-footboard. Charcoal gray carpeting and sage green upholstery warm up the stark, photo-white walls that display a revolving gallery of the client?s work. Blond wood accents provide a soothing counterpoint. The Art Deco-inspired chair and ottoman offer soft seating for two, dinner a deux (with the ottoman as table) or a great place to stretch out and read. Adding a touch of the mysterious ?East? to the already Zen mood, a Moroccan table and Chinese urns filled with seasonal branches create interest and bring the outside in..............Photo: İRose Hartman 2005; Resources: ABC Carpet & Home, Bark, Bed Bath & Beyond, Crate & Barrel, Daffy?s, Design Within Reach, Dykes Lumber, HBF Contract, Kravet Fabrics, Lee?s Art Studio, Middle Kingdom, Peron Fabrics, Upholstery: Kevin Griffin and Prabjot Kaur, West Elm
An airy master-suite had high ceilings and great light working in its favor. Working against it were faded yellow walls and a bleached, mismatched parquet floor. The transformation began with a neutral palette of creamy, off-white walls and khaki trim. The carpeting was refitted to this room, having once been an area rug in the living room of another residence. To make a stronger focal point, the headboard wall was covered in grass cloth. The window treatments and large, body pillow were made from a cork textile -in a block pattern- mimicking the weave of the carpet. Color was introduced in ways subtle ?the whimsical, lime green night stands- and not so subtle, the bright orange, trapezoid-shaped lamps, colorful bed linens and abstract, landscape painting????????Photo: İFrancis Smith 2005; * Oil Painting: Courtesy of and İCecile Brunswick 2005; Resources: ABC Carpet & Home, Bed Bath & Beyond, Bo Concepts, Crate & Barrel, Gracious Home, Oriental Shade, Painted walls: Ted Zirnite, Saxony Carpet Co. This solarium was barely more than a concrete slab before art-glass tile made it a glamorous retreat. Stair-stepped up onto the walls, it guides your view to the outside when you?re in, and to the inside when you?re out! Floor tile was ?staggered? for further interest, visually enlarging an otherwise narrow room. Flexible use furnishings were selected in bright colors to reflect the mood in the rest of the residence, creating what can be correctly called both an ?indoor,? and an ?outdoor,? paradise????????Photo: İFrancis Smith 2005; Resources: Artistic Tile, Design Within Reach, Painted walls: Ted Zirnite, Upholstery: Martin Albert Interiors, Window treatment (unseen solar shade): Window Tech
Light dining or a generous buffet are made easy with loads of prep space and plentiful,
contiguous storage. An unusual pink and orange-flecked granite was selected for the counter-tops, while backsplash tile and cabinet color make a soothingly neutral backdrop. Bright, natural light filters through an earthy, wood-bead window shade onto the parquet floor, which was extended into the kitchen -from the dining area- to create better visual flow. Multi-level task lighting and a soft, intimate elipse-of-a-dining-fixure, allow for a variety of moods. The dining table and re-upholstered chairs came from a previous apartment????????.Cabinet color and granite selection in collaboration with *Kitchen Designer Nicole P. A bold move, this client agreed to saturated, orange walls and a matching ceiling! Mocha trim relieves the eye, creating a warm and cozy interior, while secretly masking a structural challenge. The lime, mohair sofa with banana yellow welting stands out from the crowd, yet invites a snuggle. Bamboo window shades and a versatile, wicker table-footstool that breaks down into four floor pillows, gives this room options. Wood furnishings in bitter-sweet, wenge finish ground all on a diagonally installed, stripe carpet run up and over the antiquated heating/cooling system, creating an unexpected window seat. Clear, triangular lamps with oval shades keep the room from looking heavy????????.Photo: İFrancis Smith 2005; Resources: Atelier of Prague, Crate & Barrel, Kravet Fabrics, Macy?s, Oriental Shade, Painted walls: Ted Zirnite; Pier 1 Imports, Saxony Carpet Co.
